"Ouzoud Waterfalls: A Natural Wonder 1. Overview Ouzoud Waterfalls (Cascades d'Ouzoud) are the highest and most famous waterfalls in Morocco and North Africa. Located in the Middle Atlas Mountains near the village of Tanaghmeilt (Azilal province), they stand at an impressive height of about 110 meters (360 feet). 2. Etymology (The Meaning) The name "Ouzoud" comes from the Berber (Amazigh) language, meaning "the act of grinding grain." This refers to the traditional water mills found at the top of the falls, some of which are still used by locals today to grind wheat. 3. Key Features • The Tiers: The water falls in three spectacular tiers, creating a permanent mist that often forms beautiful rainbows. • Flora and Fauna: The area is surrounded by lush olive groves, pomegranate trees, and oak forests. It is also home to friendly, wild Barbary Macaques (monkeys) that interact with visitors. • The Gorge: The falls drop into the El-Abid River gorge, where visitors can take small boat rides to get closer to the cascading water. 4. Things to Do • Hiking: Following the shaded paths down to the bottom of the falls through olive trees. • Boat Rides: Taking a traditional wooden boat to reach the base of the waterfall. • Swimming: Enjoying a refreshing dip in the natural pools (especially during summer). • Local Dining: Eating a traditional Moroccan Tagine at one of the many riverside restaurants with a panoramic view of the falls."
